Mathematics research at GSSI
Mathematical models are ubiquitous in physics, engineering, information theory, social and life sciences, as they provide a formidable framework to describe the time evolution of deterministic, stochastic and complex systems.
The Mathematics area at GSSI consists of 19 faculty members. The faculty’s research interests fall into the following fields:
-
Applied Partial Differential Equations,
-
Fluid Dynamics,
-
Numerical Analysis,
-
Probability and Statistical Mechanics,
with a particular eye on research themes at the intersection of these fields and on broader applications.
The rigorous analysis of PDEs carried out in our area aims at providing a deeper understanding of unique physical phenomena, such as fluid (in)stabilities and turbulence, pattern formation and quantum systems.
Computational methods in fluid dynamics are used at the boundary between applied maths and theoretical engineering in innovative projects like modeling the full heart function.
Numerical linear algebra and numerical optimization help to design new models and numerical algorithms for applications in data mining, machine learning and network science.
The Probability and Statistical Mechanics group focuses on developing mathematical methods to address the emergence of collective behavior in classical and quantum systems.
Students and researchers in Mathematics at GSSI are encouraged to interact with other scientific communities. At GSSI, we believe that the interdisciplinary endeavor is the most effective way to do science and benefit society.
Being part of GSSI
We welcome applications from highly motivated students who want to work in an exciting and interdisciplinary environment. We offer generous scholarships and financial support for research. Calls for prospective PhD students open every year in Spring. For more details please consult the Math Doctoral Programme webpage and check the Call for PhD announcements.
We also welcome Postdoctoral applications from highly motivated junior researchers. If you are interested in doing a postdoc with us, please contact Nicola Guglielmi (the school’s chair) and check out the GSSI website and the Announcements page for open calls for postdoctoral positions.
