Contemporary Cities: Theories and Perspectives - Module I: Cities in a Global Order

This module aims to put ‘the urban’ in the perspective of globalisation, by focusing on the geographies of global economy within which cities are foci of economic activities. Attention will be drawn to theoretical approaches analysing cities as nodes of global networks of value, with an emphasis on symbolic value in cultural and creative economy, and to the conceptualisation of territorial competition and urban competitiveness, as emerging in contemporary debate. Based on these premises, the module will introduce policy-oriented streams of research on local economic development.
