Maria has a background in economics and economic geography, especially in regional, innovation, labour and policy studies. Her research explores the mechanisms underlying regional and urban development trajectories, resilience and workforce well-being, and it aims to contribute towards the improvement of economic, social and territorial cohesion. She is particularly interested in the territorial dynamics of occupational and business structures, human capital development, and labour mobility and migration, framed by the knowledge economy. In this context, Maria aims to contribute towards the development of new spatial analysis techniques, to further our understanding of territorial dynamics as complex systems, characterised by self-reinforcing mechanisms and by the formation and evolution of patterns. This research builds on recent advancements in data collection, big data and spatial analysis, including empirically based modelling, visualisation and networks.
